Alexey Kononov | temporaere theater

Alexey is one of only a few freelance ballet choreographers in Berlin. A friend of mine recently asked me what his work was like. As I started to describe our first mutual production ‘F63.9′ that is presented at UferHallen Berlin, she said: “Industrial ballet.”

In 2009, Alexey moved to Berlin after having an increasingly hard time to make work in Sankt Petersburg, Russia- the city where he was born, studied and lived after an interim in Moscow. He found himself in a paralyzing climate and decided that something has to change. Although Alexey had never been to Berlin before, he booked a one-way ticket to Schoenefeld Airport. And here he is!

Last year, Alexey kicked-off ‘temporaere theater’ as a long-term project that aims at the collaborative development and promotion of diverse contemporary art forms. It’s current home is UferHallen Berlin – a breath taking industrial space of 2500m2. Between August 2012 and May 2013, Alexey will create three new productions there. At the same time, he reaches out to other Berlin artists in order to join him for future collaborations.
